Content

Music Experience is designed for students with emerging musical skills and provides opportunities to develop their musical understanding and skills in creating and responding to music.

Students learn to sing or play an instrument by taking weekly lessons with an instrumental or vocal teacher and learn to read and write music using conventional notation. They must apply these skills in solo and ensemble contexts in class and by participating in whole-school vocal and instrumental groups.

Assessment

Creative works  60%

  • Composition or arrangement: Students compose an original musical work using digital recording software, mixing to a stereo product incorporating onboard effects for 1 to 3 minutes.
  • Ensemble performance: Students perform two musical works in an ensemble setting. They are individually part-tested on this repertoire and investigate aspects of technique on their instrument/voice - 6 to 8 minutes.
Musical literacy  40%
  • Reflection on creative work: Students demonstrate knowledge and understanding of music terminology and notation by analysing musical works. They reflect upon their learning in a Performance Evaluation document or multimodal presentation published on their digital music portfolio website - 500 words or 4-minute oral/multimodal.
  • Identifying and troubleshooting technical issues: Students collaborate to research, identify and resolve technical issues associated with electronic musical equipment and safely set up musical equipment for public performances. 350 words or 3-minute oral/multimodal.

Additional Information

Information about the instrumental music program can be found by following this link:  Instrumental Music Program

All students studying music are expected to commit to learning an instrument or take vocal lessons with either the Department for Education Instrumental Music teachers or private music instructors.

Students are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular ensembles such as vocal ensembles, stage band and beginner stage band.

Various workshops and excursions to enhance knowledge are offered throughout the year.

Performance at public events is a requirement of this subject.
