Content

Students participate in a wide variety of problem-solving activities. This subject gives students the abilities and skills required in the workplace and everyday life. They learn how to approach new challenges by investigating, modelling, reasoning, visualising, and problem-solving to communicate the relationships observed and the problems solved to others.

Students learn mathematical theoretical concepts and focus on their higher-order thinking skills in solving complex problems. Graphics calculators consolidate concepts and provide further opportunities for students to investigate mathematical phenomena.

Topics may include:

  • Statistics and counting
  • Growth and decay
  • Introduction to differential calculus
This course will provide students with the necessary skills to enter Mathematics C.

Assessment

Skills and application tasks  75%

  • Three tests - each 60 minutes
Mathematical investigation  25%
  • Maximum 8 pages

Additional Information

Students will require an approved SACE Graphics Calculator (recommended TI-84 Plus CE). Preferred prerequisite knowledge – Achievement of a C or better in year 11 Mathematics A.

To meet the SACE numeracy requirement, students must achieve a C grade in 10 credits of year 11 Mathematics.

Students will be enrolled in Mathematics classes based on teacher recommendations and parent approval. Teacher recommendations are based on previous achievements, PAT results, and career pathways. Negotiations can be made if a specific pathway is required for students.
