Content

This course is designed to provide students with more hands-on experience with fashion illustration, pattern drafting, construction techniques, adaptation and portfolio building.  

Students interpret, use, and alter sewing patterns and draft their own. They are expected to understand design elements and principles, how to apply them to drawings, and how to use designed fabric in self-directed projects.  

Students may: 

  • Identify and practise the use of fashion drafting equipment, pressing devices, sewing notions and time-saving tools
  • Operate sewing machines, over-lockers and embroidery machines
  • Apply safety and appropriate care for equipment in the sewing lab
  • Identify fabrics/linings/interfacings/notions appropriate to their designs

Assessment

Folio  40% 

  • A sketchbook highlighting students’ drawings and collections through free drawing, storyboards and croquis, building a resource file for design inspiration.  

Practical application  30% 

  • Part 1: Skills development comprising hand and machine sewing tasks
  • Part 2: Creation of at least 3 projects: a simple skirt of the student’s choice; casual wear (shorts, a dress, long pants); a hoodie jacket  
Summative  30% 
  • Students will be given opportunities to discuss ways of assessing their textile products. The discussion will include the item's quality, design, cost and care.
