Content

This subject focuses on vehicle systems. Students will study various systems and how to maintain them. They will also perform fault-finding tasks and complete written reports on the systems studied.  

Vehicle systems may include:

  • Brake system
  • Cooling system
  • Fuel system
  • Combustion system
  • Ignition system
  • Steering/suspension system 

Assessment

Specialised skills tasks  40% 

  • Compression test  20% 
    Students will demonstrate a process to assess the condition of a vehicle system. After studying their results, they will identify areas prone to failure.
  • Investigation and analysis - fault finding  20% 
    Students will check the function of engine systems (e.g. electronic/mechanical) under guided instruction to diagnose faults - maximum 500 or 3-minute equivalent.    

Design process and solution  60%

  • Design development and planning  30%
    Students will design and plan repairs to a vehicle system  - maximum 500 or 3-minute equivalent.
  • Create and evaluate the product/solution  30% 
    Students will conduct the planned repairs. This is an independent, practical assessment with a written evaluation- a maximum of 800 words or a 5-minute multimodal equivalent.
