Content

Students will explore a range of topics, including goat and sheep production, hydroponics and pig welfare. Students will develop knowledge underpinning each topic and improve their literacy, numeracy, critical and creative thinking, ICT skills, teamwork, safety around animals and ethical and intercultural understandings.  

Topics may include:

  • Goats: Royal Adelaide Show preparation; Goats judging; Vaccination and drenching; Goat breeding and breeders
  • Sheep Production: Reproductive cycle of sheep; Pregnancy toxaemia in sheep; Sheep nutrition during lambing; Lamb growth
  • Hydroponics: Hydroponics vs. conventional vegetable growing; Growing requirement for plants to thrive; Parts of hydroponics system; Data collection
  • Pig Welfare and Xenotransplantation: Farrowing crate and sow stalls; Public perception of pig welfare; Pig organ xenotransplantation medical breakthrough; The debate on xenotransplantation 

Assessment

Tasks may include:

  • Goats: Knowledge for Royal Adelaide Show interview
  • Sheep Production: Lamb growth numeracy tasks
  • Hydroponics: Vegetable growing and understanding task
  • Pig Welfare Presentation
