Content

Students enhance their welding and lathe skills and apply them safely to tasks. These may include oxy-acetylene, MIG (Metal Inert Gas) and arc welding (MMAW - Manual Metal Arc Welding).

Students design a product to produce and keep. Examples include stools, stands, bench vices, BBQ plate grills, basketball hoops, go-kart frames and more. CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software skills are developed by producing accurate technical drawings to communicate designs with a range of audiences and plan the production process. Students evaluate their design and production process.

Students develop an understanding of Safe Operating Procedures and develop skills with hand tools, handheld power tools and a range of workshop equipment, which may include:

  • Oxy-acetylene plant
  • MIG welder (Metal Inert Gas)
  • Arc welder (MMAW-Manual Metal Arc Welding) 
  • Metal lathe
  • Angle grinder
  • Pedestal grinder
  • Spray booth
  • Hand forming tools 

Assessment

Specialised Skills Tasks  20%

  • Students complete two specialised skills tasks, detailing their work and an evaluation of it -500 words for each or 3 minutes in oral/multimodal form

Design Process and Solution  50%

  • Students create a Design Folio, which includes evidence of their investigation, design, planning, production and evaluation - 2000 words or 12 minutes in multimodal form

Resource Study  30%

  • Students conduct a Resource Investigation and an Issue Exploration relevant to their design - 2000 words or 12 minutes in multimodal form

Additional Information

Students receive a fixed amount of material to produce their designs. Extra material can be purchased through the school. Alternatively, students can bring extra material from home for their projects through negotiation with the teacher.
