Content

Students enhance their welding and lathe skills and apply them safely to design and build a metal product. Examples include desks, stools, stands, bench vices, BBQ plate grills, go-kart frames and more.

CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software skills are developed to produce accurate technical drawings to communicate their designs with a range of audiences and to plan the production process. Students evaluate their design and production process.

Materials are predominantly hollow steel tube (square or round) with some flat or solid steel as required. Students develop an understanding of Safe Operating Procedures and develop skills with hand tools, handheld power tools and a range of workshop equipment, which may include:

  • Oxy-acetylene plant
  • MIG welder (Metal Inert Gas)
  • Arc welder (MMAW-Manual Metal Arc Welding)
  • Metal lathe
  • Angle grinder
  • Pedestal grinder
  • Spray booth
  • Hand forming tools

Assessment

Specialised Skills Tasks  40%

  • Two production and evaluation tasks multimodal form, maximum of 3 minutes. These may include the manufacture of a quick action clamp, a series of welds or a small lathe task, such as a water nozzle or nail punch.

Design Process and Solution  60%

  • Students investigate, design, produce and evaluate a metal project of their choice.
  • Part 1: Design Development up to 1000 words or 6 minutes oral/multimodal presentation
  • Part 2: Solution Realisation up to 500 words or 3 minutes oral/multimodal presentation

Additional Information

Completion of Year 10 Metal Technology desirable.

Students receive a fixed amount of material to produce their design. Extra material can be purchased through the school. Alternatively, through negotiation with the teacher, students can bring extra material from home for their projects.
