Content

Students develop knowledge, skills and understandings in framing and carcase construction through application tasks and a negotiated project.  

Topics may include:

  • Material characteristics and selection
  • Carcase joining techniques - knockdown, biscuit, dowel, rebate, housing mortise and tenon joints
  • Drawer construction
  • Framed door panel construction
  • Finishing techniques including iron-on veneers, routed edges, lacquer, oils 

Assessment

Specialised Skills Tasks  25%

  • Part 1: Construction Skills Exercise  15%
    Students create three joints under guided instruction. This is an independent, practical based assessment with a written evaluation - maximum 250 words or 1.5-minute multimodal equivalent.
  • Part 2: Top Construction Exercise  10%
    Students design a concept top for a bench or table. This is an independent design based assessment with a written evaluation - maximum 250 words or 1.5-minute multimodal equivalent.

Design Process and Product  75%

  • Part 1: Design Process  25%
    Students use the design process to investigate and analyse existing products for their features and aesthetics, as well as researching and discussing any relevant issues. They will then design and plan to make a product (solution), based on what features and aesthetics appealed to them. This is an independent design assessment with a written evaluation - maximum 500 or 3-minute multimodal equivalent.
  • Part 2: Students create and evaluate the product - solution  50%
    Students produce their designed product in the workshop, using skills developed in Construction Skills Exercise. This is an independent, practical based assessment with a written evaluation - maximum 500 words or 3-minute multimodal equivalent.

There may be a cost of the materials and finishes required to produce the chosen major project.
