Child Studies

Content

Students focus on children and their development from conception to 8 years. Students develop knowledge and understanding of young children through exploration of concepts such as the development, needs, and rights of children, the value of play, concepts of childhood and families, and the roles of parents and caregivers. They also consider the importance of behaviour management, child nutrition, and the health and well-being of children.

Students investigate contemporary issues that are relevant to children and their development. They consider broad themes such as those related to children who are migrants or refugees, displacement, health issues for children in Indigenous communities, access to education, the exploitation of children, literacy and numeracy, disability and equity, child protection, gender stereotyping in play, clothing, textiles and merchandising, and children’s television. 

Assessment

Group Activity  20% 

• Child’s Party: Action Plan 400 words, Practical, Evaluation 400 words 
  Students prepare an action plan, identifying the issues related to hosting a Child’s Party, considering healthy foods and safe play practices. Students complete the practical and evaluate their learning.

• Child’s Garment: Action Plan 400 words, Practical, Evaluation 400 words 
  Students prepare an action plan identifying safety issues related to creating a child’s garment and consider comfort and affordability. Students complete the practical and evaluate their learning. 

• Meal for a Family: Research 400 words, Practical, Evaluation 400 words
  Students research healthy alternatives for families, considering budget and efficiency. Students complete the practical and evaluate their learning.

• Students identify a relevant contemporary issue related to Child Development, presenting their findings as a written report of 600 words, or a 4-minute individual oral presentation, or equivalent in multimedia form. 

Additional Information

There are no additional costs associated with this course unless a student chooses to complete a dish or garment beyond allowable costing.
